From September 25, 2010 visitors will be able to meet Sydney
Wildlife World’s newest resident a six‐month old red‐necked
wallaby joey. Each day of the school holidays, the joey will
take up residence in the Sydney Wildlife World nursery under
the close watchful eye of Sydney Wildlife World staff.
Arriving from Blackbutt Reserve today the joey was named
Bluey based on the old Australian slang tradition of calling a
red‐headed male 'Blue' or 'Bluey'.
Visitors will be able to witness Bluey being fed twice a day at
11.00am and 2.00pm, hopping in and out of his pouch (a
duffel bag lined with a jumper) and resting throughout the
day. In the evenings keepers will take Bluey home to ensure he
is fed and cared for around the clock.
Michael Drinkwater, Mammal Department Supervisor said “Bluey is doing great he’s very alert and really enjoys jumping out of his bag and having a hop around. He’s become a favourite among the keepers and I’m sure he’ll be just as big a hit with the public.”
The red‐necked wallaby ranges throughout the eastern parts of Australia from the Queensland ‐ New South Wales border area, right through to South Australia. It is also found in Tasmania. Found in subtropical, cool temperate, wet and dry sclerophyll forests, and woodland with adjacent grassy areas.
Sydney Wildlife World is one of the worlds largest animal encounters under one roof featuring interactive world‐class displays of all‐Aussie animals set in the heart of Sydney on Darling Harbour and is open from 9am to 5pm daily (tickets sold after 4pm are valid till 12pm the next day).
