Top 5 Things To Do In Sydney

As a local, I always get asked by friends and relatives from overseas about the best things to do to experience Sydney city first hand. If you have never been to Sydney - perhaps from interstate or from overseas - and want adventure and excitement (without trekking in the bush), then this is your guide to Sydney.

The rite of passage for any primary (elementary) school child in Sydney is going to Sydney Aquarium. It is a huge underwater aquarium where you get to experience unique freshwater and marine environments and discover an incredible 13,000 animals from 700 different species - including the world's largest variety of sharks and rays. This is great if you can't or don't like swimming and want to see sharks up close.

At Sydney Aquarium, you'll get to venture through 14 newly-themed zones including a new Shark Walk, a tropical Bay of Rays, an interactive Discovery Rockpool, Mangrove Swamps, a shipwreck and the new ocean tunnel walk-through - Shark Valley. Australia has some of the world's most intriguing marine animals - from dugongs to huge sharks, massive stingrays, majestic turtles, jellyfish, penguins, sea dragons, thousands of tropical fish, enormous crabs and much, much more. You can experience it all without getting wet!

From the freshwater rivers of the south to the tropical waters of the north, including the world's biggest and most impressive Great Barrier Reef exhibit, a trip to Sydney Aquarium takes you around Australia's coastline, into its oceans and up into its waterways - all without leaving the city.

Location: 1-5 Wheat Rd, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia
Opening hours: Open 365 days a year - 9am to 8pm. Last entries are STRICTLY 7pm.

Other than the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, unique Australian animals would be  on the to see list of any tourist's schedule. Whether you're a kid at heart or arriving with kids, you'll love Wildlife Sydney Zoo, where you'll get a close encounter with iconic Australian animals: kangaroos and wallabies, koalas and kookaburras to possums to wombats.

If you're not into fluffy animals, they have reptiles and bugs too, where you get to view some of the deadliest Australian insects (behind glass of course). So whether your into cuddly cuteness or creepy crawlies, you are sure to be pleased.

Location: 1-5 Wheat Road, Darling Harbour, Sydney 2000 Australia
Opening hours: Open daily from 9am - 6pm (last entry STRICTLY 5pm)

For the ultimate view of the city of Sydney, you can't go past The Sydney Tower Eye (formally known as the Sydney Centre Point Tower). With a range of tours and walks available, they have packages to suit those of the not so faint hearted to people afraid of heights (but still want to see all of Sydney).

Skywalk Tour
You'll be walking on air 268 metres above stunning Sydney, with the city streets directly beneath your feet. Look down through the glass floor viewing platform for a bird's-eye perspective of the bustling city below, as part of a 45 minute guided tour around the outside of the iconic golden turret of Sydney Tower.

A must visit iconic Sydney attraction has to be the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Built in 1923, it has become a symbol of Sydney and Australia. Most people will take pictures of the bridge or perhaps travel on the bridge via the train or foot, but did you know that the bridge is now hosting bridge walks up to the top of the arch! It is an incredibly exhilarating experience, but rest assured, it is safe as every walker is harnessed.

Last but not least, one of the most well known representations of Australia has to be the Opera House. A unique architecture by Jørn Utzon, it epitomises Sydney and its wonderful shape of peaking crests are recognised all over the world. If you come to Sydney, this is a must visit place. The great thing about the Opera House is, you don't have to go inside or attend any events to tour the area. Feel free to walk about the premises and take pictures. If you want to go inside the Opera House, they do offer tours and musical or theatrical events for the public.

Sydney's most spectacular outdoor lighting event, Vivid Sydney, has arrived to take over the city after dark from the 24th May until 10th June 2013, creating a spectacular canvas of light, music and ideas.

The 18 day festival of light, which colours Sydney with creativity and inspiration, is immensely popular and not to be missed. In fact, Vivid Sydney is the biggest festival of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and last year attracted around 500,000 attendees.

Along with its amazing eye-catching light installations, is a host of free exhibitions, outdoor lighting sculptures and contemporary music performances from local and international artists.

The world class light show is this year is also being extended to the Darling Harbour precinct for the first time ever, and will transform the precinct into a spectacle of dancing water fountains, water screen projection performances and dazzling light and water shows, never seen before in Australia, and masterminded by France's legendary Aquatique Show International.

Darling Harbour will also feature a Citibank Pop-up Bar, open from 6pm to midnight during Vivid Sydney, and the Australian National Maritime Museum will light up with a rooftop projection inspired by the colour, patterns, flavours and sounds of India to complement the museum's exhibition - East of India.

Darling Harbour restaurants are also offering special deals throughout the festival. 30 Seconds To Mars Sydney Concert 2013

Warriors of progressive metal Thirty Seconds To Mars will be unleashing a blockbuster performance in Sydney this August!

Lead singer Jared Leto revealed the bands intention to return to Australian shores whilst here earlier this month to promote hugely anticipated fourth album, Love Lust Faith + Dreams, out 17 May. Which Leto told BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe that it’s a “complete transformation for us... stronger, better and more evolved”.

No strangers to innovation, in partnership with NASA the band literally launched first single ‘Up In The Air’ into space for an ‘out of this world’ premiere 230 miles above the Earth. The track was carried aboard the SpaceX rocket and received its first ever play on the International Space Station.

Having already blown Australian audiences away with sold out theatre tours in 2007 and again wowing audiences across the country in 2010, the guys are primed to conquer our arenas for the very first time this August.

On stage the band is a force of nature, Leto’s captivating showmanship and the band’s skillful execution leaving little doubt why their fans - named ‘The Echelon’ after one of their songs - are so devout. On their last tour, the band even broke a Guinness World Record for longest ever concert tour after performing an astonishing 311 shows over two years in almost 60 countries in 6 continents.

Having sold over five million albums, amassing more than 300 million views on YouTube and with a new album on the horizon, it’s a safe bet that the Thirty Seconds To Mars Australian arena tour will be one of the most electrifying events of the year.

When: Sun 11 August 2013 - Starts at 8 AM
Where: Sydney Entertainment Centre - 35 Harbour Street, Darling Harbour
Buy Tickets: Ticketmaster
Telephone: 1300 883 622

Reviews from TripAdvisor.com on Metro Apartments on Darling Harbour

5 of 5 starsReviewed May 1, 2013
We as a family of 4 wanted an affordable location close to the city - we got a great deal at Metro Darling Harbour.
The steps entering could be a problem for older/less able travellers, but we managed fine, and enjoyed the close proximity to Darling Harbour and public transport. Overall pretty good value for money and front desk staff very helpful and nice.

5 of 5 starsReviewed April 30, 2013
Fantastic Location!!!! From our room it took about one minute to walk to Darling Harbor. I was travelling with two kids who are quite lazy and i knew they would not be up for walking every where. But we used the mono rail to get around and they had a blast. We went into town did shopping a few days and Powerhouse Museum, Wax Museum,Paddy's Markets, Maritime Museum, Jet Boats and Sydney Eye. Metro Apartment were central to all these locations and kids did not complain once. The view from our room was to die for. Thanks for a fantastic first weekend away for over 20yrs. Will defiantly be back.
