Slither into the Year of the Snake
In February 2013 don your best red outfit, adorn yourself with a bloodstone, find your inner schemer and slither your way into the Year of the Snake at one of Sydney's favourite festivals. Sydney Chinese New Year Festival kicks off with a festive bang on Friday 8 February and closes with the splash of dragon boat racing on Sunday 24 February. And in between you'll find everything from art exhibits, film festivals and markets to lunar feasts at top Sydney restaurants and of course, the ever popular Chinese New Year Twilight Parade.

Sydney's festival lays claim to the title of the biggest Chinese New Year Festival outside mainland China. There's so much happening that Sydney needs more than two weeks to fit it all in. For full details of the more than eighty events and activities on offer - many of them free - see the website here, but below is a summary of the festival's not-to-be-missed highlights.

Highlights

Chinese New Year Markets
The festival begins with the authentic sights, sounds, smells and tastes of a Chinese marketplace, transforming Sydney's Belmore Park into a little piece of China. The festival's opening weekend serves up food stalls, Chinese arts and crafts, entertainment, and the Chinese New Year AYAM Kitchen where former Master Chef favourites, Adam Liaw and Alvin Quah, will be giving cooking demonstrations and tips.

Valentine Night Darling Harbour Apartments

Valentine's Day - a celebration or all things romantic or another excuse for commercial exploitation of the gullible masses? I guess I fall into the Valentine's Scrooge category. Don't get me wrong. I love romance, but I'd prefer romantic gestures to be spontaneous. But don't let my "Bah! Humbug!" spoil your Valentine's Day plans. If the romantic in you is looking to declare your undying love on February 14, then our readers want to know where the perfect place is to do it. In the meantime here are a few suggestions.

Cocktails:
Romeo and Juliet had a grand passion, as well as an unfortunate penchant for swilling poisonous potions. Delete the suicide and tragic outcomes and spend your Valentine's Day imbibing delicious cocktails instead. Sydney has so many great cocktail bars that it can be hard to choose, but inspiration can surely be found in Five of Sydney's Best Cocktail Bars.

On the Water:
Perhaps your love is on the epic scale of Cleopatra and Marc Antony, who enjoyed some pretty spectacular river cruising in their time. Who needs the exotic mystery of the Nile when Sydney offers the unsurpassed beauty of Sydney Harbour to serve as the perfect romantic backdrop for your Valentine's Day experience? Captain Cook Cruises offer three dinner and cruising options ranging from $59 to $179 per person. Magistic Cruises also have a Valentine's Day Dinner Cruise including three course dinner and drinks from $120 per person.

Cinema
If the great screen romances are your thing and you'd rather be near the water than on it you could try Bondi Openair Cinema, where the romantic classic, Pretty Woman is showing on February 14. Alternatively check out the romantic Breakfast at Tiffany's at Opel Moonlight Cinema 2012/2013 @ Centennial Park

Rooftop Romance:
Maybe you're more the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan types and prefer romance on a rooftop Sleepless in Seattle style. Obviously the Empire State Building is out of the question, but Sydney has some stylish rooftop venues complete with romantic atmosphere and great views. Others to try include The Rooftop Bar at Darling Harbour's Coast Restaurant and Cafe Sydney on the rooftop of Customs House.

Dessert Restaurants:
Napoleon was a huge chocolate fan and always took chocolate with him on his military campaigns. Perhaps it was a gift from Josephine, slipped into his saddle bags as a reminder of their love. If chocolate ranks highly on your couple's treats list then dessert restaurants, especially the chocolate specialists, may be the place for you to celebrate Valentine's Day. Try Cheeky Chocolate Cafe at Strathfield, Max Brenner Chocolate Bar or Guylian Chocolate Cafe.

When the sun goes down the party really begins, lighting up the popular Cockle Bay area from 7pm until 9pm. At 7pm NSW Governor, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir will sail into Cockle Bay on the Admiral's Barge. She will deliver the Australia Day address and will be followed by Deputy Premier (and an old work colleague of mine), The Honourable Andrew Stoner. The Big Issue Street Football Festival's junior competition

street football festival australia day darling harbour

The Big Issue Street Football Festival is a bit of a misnomer this year. There won't be action on the streets but on a giant floating pitch in Darling Harbour instead. The competition runs from 18 to 28 January, but on Australia Day you can see the participants in the junior competition from 9am to 11.30am. It's free to attend.

Waves of Migration light show

waves of migration

The Waves of Migration light show will premiere on Australia Day with an animated light projection of migration stories over the sail-like roofline of the Australian National Maritime Museum. Learn the stories of those who have come to Australia. The projection will then show every evening until 17 February.

Dawn Calling Sydney Festival

Surfers, runners and early starters are in for a treat as Russian horn player Arkady Shilkloper brings his giant alphorn to iconic Sydney sites for a series of dawn callings.

These serenades to the sun will take place on beaches, ferries and city sites in the early hours, as Shilkloper helps you greet the new day.

A masterful performer, Shilkloper has played solo and with Moscow Art Trio (Sydney Festival 2009), the Vienna Art Orchestra and many more.

Russian Alpenhorn player wakes Sydney

Meet Arkady Shilkloper, he is a master Alpenhorn player from Russia and is here for the Sydney festival to wake up the city with his melodic horn in Dawn Calling.
HE HAS played his three-metre long alphorn at dawn on Bondi Beach, aboard the Manly ferry, in Hyde Park and even alongside the giant rubber duck temporarily berthed at Darling Harbour.

But on Wednesday morning, Russian alphorn player Arkady Shilkloper played atop the most recognisable Sydney location of all: the largest sail of the Sydney Opera House. Cutting a tiny figure from below, the multi-instrumentalist performed as part of the Sydney Festival as the city woke to a perfect summer's day.

''It's quite a special feeling because the audience is very enthusiastic,'' Moscow-born Shilkloper said of performing at sunrise. ''It's not just people who come by accident.''

"I Try to find the best place for acoustics and visual look'' ... the repertoire of Russian alphorn player Arkady Shilkloper ranges from traditional Swiss songs to improvisational jazz.
Of his choice of Sydney locations, Shilkloper said: ''I try to find the best place for acoustics and visual look. It's kind of an improvisation.

''It was not easy to play on a [ferry]. The boat was swinging with the waves and it wasn't a musical kind of swinging. It was not stable.

''But I still played from Manly beach back to Sydney."

The 56-year-old began his music career at six, playing the alto horn in a brass orchestra in Moscow. He has been lauded by his musical peers for playing that ''[goes] places that horn players aren't supposed to go without a net, map, seatbelt, crash helmet, overhead air support and a note from their mothers''.

Shilkloper's alphorn repertoire ranges from traditional Swiss songs to improvisational jazz. Each year, he gives about 100 masterclasses to other musicians.

Shilkloper is not only a masterful player of the alphorn but several brass instruments and the didgeridoo.

Jeffrey Agrell, an associate professor of horn at the University of Iowa's school of music has said Shilkloper is ''simply the most creative hornist on the planet and one of the greatest horn players who has ever lived''.

    Sydney Shakespeare Festival

A sign of Sydney's cultured side, the sixth annual Sydney Shakespeare Festival will run for over a month in early 2013, from Thursday January 17 to Sunday February 24. Located at the edges of Bicentennial Park in Annandale, the festival's outdoor stage allows a beautiful view of the harbour to compliment the Shakespeare experience.

Like in 2012, there will be two plays to see: Much Ado About Nothing and As You Like It. Shows will run from Thursday to Sunday each week, alternating every few nights. Performances dates for each play are listed here. The performances start at 8.00pm each night and end at approximately 10.30pm, with a 15 minute interval. You can start getting there to stake out your seat from around 7.00pm.

The festival is a BYO event, so to make the night more enjoyable bring a picnic, a rug and/or low chairs. Don't forget something to keep you warm too if it looks like it's going to be a cold night. Higher chairs are also okay, but you will have to sit towards the back of the audience so others can see. If it looks like rain, bring an umbrella, because the festival will still go on through drizzle and light showers.

Tickets to the shows cost $29.00 for adults, $23.00 for concessions and $17.00 for high school students. The event is completely free for children 12 years and under, people 65 years and over and anyone with a disability. A booking fee of $0.30 applies to tickets purchased online (but it's waived for the free tickets). You can book your tickets online till 5.00pm on the day of the performance. Just click here.

There are a few different means of transport that will get you to the Sydney Shakespeare Festival. You can catch the light rail from Central or Lilyfield to Jubilee or Rozelle Bay stations. You can also catch a 431 bus from Millers Point to Federal Road at Glebe Point. If you want to drive, there is a car park on Chapman Road, as well as street parking within easy walk to the festival.

Competitions on a floating pitch in Darling Habour

Darling Harbour is one of Sydney's entertainment hubs and for 11 days in January, from Friday January 18 to Monday January 28, its focus will be on soccer. Not televised soccer though. Live matches. Not what you expected from Darling Harbour is it? For those wondering where these matches will be played, a purpose-built floating soccer pitch will be erected on the water in Cockle Bay.

Now in its third year, The Big Issue Street Football Festival is a free, annual event run by The Big Issue. As well as raising awareness about homelessness, it seeks to raise money through team registrations to support its Community Street Soccer Program, which sees homeless, disabled, unemployed and otherwise disadvantaged men and women meet weekly for soccer training and matches. These players use soccer to improve their health, reconnect with their community and build their self-esteem.

On Friday January 18 there will be a launch event featuring media personalities, the Westfield Matildas, parliamentarians and Indigenous players, running from 8.00am to 11.00am. A number of competitions will then run throughout the Festival, including the Junior Competition, comprising of more than 50 junior teams from NSW clubs, and the Government Agency Cup, which includes police and fire fighters.

On Wednesday January 23, the A-League Youth Challenge will take place from 12.00pm to 4.30pm. This competition will be made up of U21s from Central Coast Mariners, Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers, Melbourne Heart, Brisbane Roar and the Australian Institute of Sport. The Corporate Cup will run from Monday January 21 to Thursday January 24, consisting of sixteen teams from some of Sydney's largest companies.

If you want to see the main event however, you'll want to visit on Sunday January 27 (3.00pm to 8.00pm) or Monday January 28 (12.00pm to 4.00pm), when the Community Street Soccer Program National Championships will be held. The competition consists of more than 60 homeless and marginalised players from around the country representing their state or territory as part of the Street Soccer Program.

In total, 1000 players are expected to take part in over 250 matches throughout The Big Issue Street Football Festival, up from 900 participants last year. Even if you're not into the sport, just seeing one of the matches take place on the floating pitch should be pretty fun.

Best Accomodation close to the cruise ships

EVEN for an industry that routinely deals in superlatives, this year is going to be huge.
The arrival of mega-cruise ship Radiance of the Seas at the Overseas Passenger Terminal on Friday morning marked the start of another record cruise season for Sydney - where a swathe of liners will make 265 visits to the harbour before the season ends in April.
A peak of 40 ships in just 29 days in ''Super February'' will help this year overtake the record of 198 total ship visits to Sydney, set last season, by 30 per cent.
Even the new record is not expected to stand long. The NSW Ports Minister, Duncan Gay, says the number of visits is likely to reach 300 next season, ''and if this trend continues by 2020, it is conceivable that nearly 1 million cruise passengers will be visiting Sydney each year''.

And many of those passengers are Australian. The Radiance of the Seas' passenger manifest reveals 90 per cent of the 2100 people disembarking yesterday, after a 17-night voyage from Hawaii, were Australian.
Gavin Smith, the managing director of Royal Caribbean Cruises Australia - which counts the liner among its fleet - said he expected up to 750,000 Australians to take a cruise during 2012.
That figure would eclipse last year's 620,000 Australian cruise ship passengers, which was a 34 per cent jump on 2010.

By comparison, industry figures recorded a 4 per cent rise in American passengers and a 5 per cent increase in British passengers during the same 2011 period.
Mr Smith, who is also the chairman of the International Cruise Council of Australasia, said the industry is following the strength of the Australian dollar. It has found the local market receptive to the idea of a holiday at sea.

''The stronger economy is providing a better return, and the better return is attracting a better quality of ship,'' he said.
This season will also be marked by the opening of the $57 million cruise passenger terminal at White Bay in March. However, the new terminal will remain inaccessible to mega-liners too tall to pass under the Harbour Bridge, fuelling ongoing debate about the need for access to Garden Island despite a planned $30 million upgrade of the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

The chief executive of Carnival Australia, Ann Sherry, said access to Garden Island for three ships during the next two cruise seasons was a ''step forward''.
But Ms Sherry said the developments would not go far enough to support long-term growth, and access to Garden Island for ship overflow during the peak season should be part of the permanent three-berth solution for the harbour.
A spokesman for Mr Gay said Sydney would be able to cope with future demand.
